Dealing with nighttime diaper leaks can be no fun for parents and babies alike. This common phenomenon is something that many parents have to deal with, so you’re not alone in this at all! In today’s blog, we wanted to explore this topic again with an eye toward helping you and baby stay dry all night long.
Step 1: Troubleshoot The Root Cause (If Possible)
Many times, the solution to diaper leakage can be simple or at least easily identified. Enacting the solution in a way that works, well that is a bit more difficult. Here are some common root causes that you can troubleshoot to hopefully nip this issue in the bud. If it’s not one of these, then we have some other tips to help with the issue.
- Your baby’s diaper is oversaturated and is leaking.
- Try changing your baby’s diaper right before putting them down for the night to avoid this.
- Your baby’s diaper may be slightly too large or otherwise fitting incorrectly.
- Try going up or down in size for your diapers or try another brand. Some brands offer specialized nighttime or overnight diapers that tend to be more comfortable and more absorbent.
- Your baby is sleeping in a position that opens the seal between your baby and the diaper, causing a path for a leak.
- Try adjusting your baby’s arms and legs so that they sleep in a more compact or tucked in position
Try Adding A Diaper Booster Pad
Sometimes a diaper alone won’t be enough for your baby’s nighttime urine discharge. Check your local big box store or Amazon for diaper booster pads for babies. This is a small pad, similar to a menstrual pad, that can be attached to the inside of the diaper to provide yet another layer of moisture absorbency.
Try The Double Diaper Method
If pads aren’t working or if you still need some extra leakage protection, then you can try the double diaper method. Rather than taking two of the same sized diapers and putting them on your baby, instead buy a small package of slightly larger diapers and then put that over the top of your baby’s typical night time diaper. This will provide an extra layer of protection inside and out that should have your baby staying dry all night long, or at least until they wake up for their next feeding!
